The selection of string quartets by Bacewicz, Bujarski, Górecki, Lasoń and Łukaszewski represented here is not to be understood as an attempt to compile an anthology of the most popular pieces, but as a sample demonstrating the excellent skills of composers of different generations. The Fourth String Quartet by Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969 ) is the most distinctive chamber work - a perfectly laid out composition with masterly transformed folk reminiscences. Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's approach to the sources of Polish music is completely different - the themes are concealed in austere chords, in obsessively repeated motives and the simplicity of melodic lines. The quartets by Aleksander Lasoń (1951) and Zbigniew Bujarski ( 1933 ) are occasional compositions of high value, both dedicated to outstanding personalities: the prematurely deceased Silesian composer Andrzej Krzanowski and Krzysztof Penderecki who organized festivals in Lusławice. The youngest of composers presented here is Paweł Łukaszewski (1969). His Quartet is an extremely expressive and dynamic piece which makes great demands on the instrumentalists. The excellent composer's craft which enables use of full capacity of instruments in the development of form may be regarded as one of few features which all these compositions, so disparate aesthetically, have in common.
