This is the first part of a fundamental monograph on the life and work of Witold Lutosławski (1913-1994) by two outstanding musicologists. The whole will consist of two volumes (the second part entitled ''The Road to Mastery'' will appear in 2004). In ''The Road to Maturity'' the authors discuss the events from Lutosławski's life in a detailed way, analyse all his works written during the period in question (until 1960), present his musical fascinations as well as the efforts to explore the original and innovatory musical language and his connections with the outstanding figures of the epoch. The monograph forms an important item in the authors' academic output and is their excellent contribution to the Polish musicological literature. The book contains an extensive illustrative material in the form of musical examples and photographs.
