''The Legend of the Baltic'' was premiered in Poznań on 28 November, 1924 and was quickly dubbed as a Polish national opera. It is distinguished by excellent craftsmanship through monumental ensemble scenes with choir and soloists. Nowowiejski referred to the romantic traditions of Italian and German opera and introduced elements of Polish and proto-Slavic folklore and legend, and has successfully utilised archaisms. The opera is based on an old Slavic myth about the sunken city of Vineta. The action takes place in the Slavic Baltic coast in prehistoric times. The wealth of folk, fairy and mythological themes in a wonderful musical setting made this opera a great success on its launch and within one season it was performed more than 50 times.
