The second symphony, the Op. 19 in B flat major, which was completed in 1909, clearly shows the gift for symphonic construction although he had yet not discovered his final and individual musical idiom, being still preoccupied with the aesthetics of the post-Wagnerian school of neo-romanticism, and heavily influenced by the style and ideas of Richard Strauss. It is only with his last two symphonies that Szymanowski attains to the full powers of his mature and individual technique of composition.
