The author of the publication, a well-known saxophonist, takes the reader on a remarkable journey through time in the footsteps of the instrument. This musical journey replays more than 160-years of the history of the saxophone, showing its double face. Individual chapters move readers from the workshop of the brilliant designer Adolf Saks, to venues for military brass band performances, and also to jazz clubs, dancing clubs and music schools on different continents, among others. Readers of Jacek Delongs book witness the rapid development of the saxophone. Almost everyone can see with their own eyes how this instrument slipped out of the military barracks, breaking away from the marching tempo to dance in nearby haunts. This indecent misdemeanor almost cancelled its career. With time, however, it was rehabilitated and even get permission to play in the symphony orchestra. Apart form that, it got into music schools of all types. However, its dual character never ceases to arouse emotions. The author cites the controversy between classical players and jazzmen as evidence. The expedition ends in the year 2011, a year by which jazz artists are no longer self-taught, and classical musicians break with their rigid rules. Still, there are many unbeaten roads, as no saxophone player has succeeded in fully exploiting the versatility of this instrument. Clear division into chapters allows multiple readings to return to any chosen stage of development of the saxophone. Colourful illustrations, a discography (discs mentioned in the work) and an index of people, like souvenirs from the journey to date, are perfect complements to this publication.
