Celebrations for Dr Elżbieta Dziębowska

2009-04-23
On Tuesday, 21 April, at the PWM Salon in Krakow there was a cosy birthday celebration.

"The Encyclopedia of Music is not only a great and pioneering work of Polish musicology, but also your opus vitae, and the most important publication in the history of PWM. We're delighted to have the pleasure of working with you in its creation. Our joy is so much greater, that your birthday coincides with the release of the next volume of the Biographical Encyclopedia of Music. For every author, editor and publisher there is probably no more delightful day than the day on which the result of long, arduous work is crowned with the scent of freshly printed books. However, we wouldn't be able to celebrate, if it weren't for your determination, dedication and erudition - for this, today we are extremely grateful "- said Andrzej Kosowski, PWM's Editor -in-chief. Professor Mieczysław Tomaszewski - a long serving director and editor-in-chief of PWM - recalled how in 1971, when he asked whether if she would take on editing the music encyclopedia Dr Dziębowska without hesitation or reservation answered "Yes". It was an enormous challenge with the first volume of her 'life's work' appearing in 1979 and the penultimate due out in a few weeks' time.

Congratulations and best wishes received from colleagues and friends – and the Directorate of PWM, the scientific editors of the Institute of Musicology UJ, with whom she was connected for many years, and technical editors.
