Public media will not grant this year's OPUS Awards

2009-07-28
The competition reached the stage of determining the 7 final nominees.

From the 25 authors of works in the second stage of the OPUS Public Media Awards in the field of contemporary music, the jury has nominated 7:

Magdalena Długosz for the piece Poza ciszą for tape
Aleksandra Gryka for the piece Youmec for harpsichord and tape
Paweł Hendrich for the piece Metasolidus for symphony orchestra
Justyna Kowalska for the piece Obraz 1929 (Zdzisław Beksiński in memoriam) for symphony orchestra
Hanna Kulenty for the piece String Quartet No. 4 (A Cradle Song)
Aleksander Lasoń for the piece Called Back. Sacrificial Chanting and Playing to ANNA for solo voices and string orchestra
Paweł Mykietyn for the piece Pasja według św. Marka.

The winners were to be announced 14 September 2009 at a gala celebration broadcast on TVP1, TVP Kultura and Polish Radio Program 1 but, on 24 July 2009, the Board of Polish Radio and Polish Television took the decision not to award the OPUS and COGITO Public Media Awards. In a statement the given reason is the alarming financial situation of the public media: "The competitions have reached the final stage, in accordance with the rules, seven works have been nominated for the main award. No financial awards are associated with this nomination. At the same time, the Boards of Polish Television and Polish Radio have confirmed their regulatory obligation to provide the widest possible promotion via their antennae for the nominees in the OPUS and COGITO contests. These decisions are solely dictated by current economic circumstances and are not due to a substantive and qualitative assessment of works of the nominees. These decisions are one-offs and do not concern the future of either award."
