Romuald Twardowski composed the Piano Concerto No. 1 during his studies in Vilnius, in 1956. The current version of the Concerto (the original was lost) was reconstructed by the composer in 2005, on the basis of the piano reduction and archival recordings made in 1956 by Radio Vilnius.
This is a one-movement piece. It begins with a slow introduction, followed by a sonata allegro with a mirror reprise, followed by an extended cadenza of virtuosic character. In conclusion, the theme from the introduction reappears, this time in the rhythm of a polonaise.
