Three Sonnets to Don Quixote
for baritone and piano
"The texts for the three sonnets were taken from an old edition of Don Quixote, preceded by an introduction including a dozen or so sonnets. Literary fiction is used in the sonnets by this author; the knight-errant is asked on behalf of the heroes of the then fashionable novels of chivalry (Amadis, Orlando Furioso, and others) to praise his virtues and exploits in solemn words, and at the same time to point out various vices and foibles to him. In adding music to the three sonnets that I selected I gave tribute to the great writer and to Spain, a country I got to know and fell in love with during my trip there."
