To a considerable extent Józef Elsner 's Marian Vespers reflects the influences of the general conventions of the epoch regarding church utility music, although a religious atmosphere, peculiar to the composer, can be found in it. Individual psalms are set in a fairly concise way and the entire cycle is crowned with a broadly extended ''Magnificat'', ending with and elaborate doxology. Most of the psalms and the final canticle have relatively simple and mostly declamatory choral textures. The solo passages are confined to short sections and they gain more importance only in the psalm ''Laudate pueri'', in which, however, all the solo parts are used with the melodic factor decidedlyoutweighing vocalvisrtuosity. [...] Józef Elsner's Vespers, published here, confirms the fact that his religious compositions, which significantly, begin and end his creative output, are firmly grounded in the central-European musical tradition of the classical period and especially that of Austro-Bohemia and Silesia.
