5 Songs
for Voice and Piano
The first cycle of 5 Songs was written in 1952. It contains the follwing pieces: Autumn (April 1952, poem called Oto widzisz, znowu idzie jesień from 1936), Visit (April 1952, poem from 1936), Wild Rose (May 1952, poem from 1942), Mirage and Caravan
(April 1952, both poems from the cycle Egzotyki nieprawdopodobne - 1929).
The selection of poems for this series does not seem accidental. The first three
focus on everyday, domestic, matters. Even where there is nostalgia, longing for the Spring (Autumn), it is enough to look at the emerald ring on thy one finger and the sorrow disappears. Indeed, Gałczyński is characterized by a fanatical, Dickensian love of the world [...] This love of the world of things and people excludes pessimism.
