Lumen
for Symphony Orchestra
As a motto of the work I chose the following words of Dylan Thomas: ''Light breaks where no sun shines''. LUMEN (in Latin means Light) is a work which represents in sound a phenomena of the unfolding light seen e.g. In a beam of light in a crystal prism. This luminous and radiant light is full of twinkling colors, analogous to the colorful designs seen in a kaleidoscope or in stained glasses of the gothic cathedrals. I was especially inspired by the magnificentnstained glass in the windows of the Chartres Cathedral in France.
The piece, in memoriam of my dear friend Dennis Eberhard, is written on a commission from the Cleveland Chamber Symphony with the generous support from the Fromm Music Foundation. [Marta Ptaszyńska]
