Włodzimierz Grabiński’s Piano Miniatures for children and youngsters consists of eleven short works of increasing difficulty. Most of them have titles indicating the form or genre, but programme elements also appear. Their artistic expression is genuine, tension is built up in a natural way, and the transparent melodic lines help young pianists to learn the works. Consequently, the last few pieces represent a very good introduction to works from the standard pianistic repertoire, such as etudes by Moritz Moszkowski and nocturnes by Fryderyk Chopin.

This set of works stands out among similar collections in the Polish musical literature. In the integration of the conceptual principles with the form of the individual pieces, the logical flow to the music and the tailoring of the texture to the didactic tenets and the figuration to performance practice and the ‘material’ of the instrument, these miniatures display outstanding qualities The proposed fingering should be regarded as the most suitable and tailored to both the musical ideas and the didactic goals.

In my opinion, these Piano Miniatures are extremely valuable pieces, and I hope that this publication will make them widely available to young performers.
