Little Music 4 closes the cycle of four chamber pieces with the same title. This work, commissioned by Zygmunt Krauze, the leader of the ''Music Workshop'' enjoys considerable popularity both at home and abroad. It is an exceptional composition in several respects: the treatment of the trombone part is very special as the player also performs the role of the conductor; there is a set of coordinated performing parts instead of a traditional score, and, finally, the movements of the work are strongly contrasted. The ''aggression'' of the first movement is expressed by means of fast tempo, very loud dynamics (ffff) as well as extraordinarily emotional four themes bringing into prominence the characteristic instrumental colours of the forces used. In turn, the inertia of the second movement is marked by a tonal ''motto'' of Górecki, made up of three notes of a song (presented three times). A quiet melody of this movement is interrupted from time to time by interpolations of the minor ninth intoned by the clarinet and the trombone. This compact work has a reflective punch line, which indicates that Little Music 4 reflects that which is brutal and that which is human in the world. [Based on A. Thomas, Górecki, Kraków 1998, PWM]
