One of the first works by Baird; its music is shaped to a certain extent by the use of controlled aleatoric technique. Varying tempo, mobility of motives, dynamics and tone colour determine the construction of the Play. Sections characterised by rarefied, quasi-pointillist tone form the structure of the composition. Apart from presenting diverse colours the work is marked by the partiality for clear, expressive melodic line, typical of the composer.
