''Romance sans paroles et Rondo élégant'', Op. 9, a two-part composition written in 1852 during the great Russian tour of the seventeen year-old violinist, was a homage paid by the young composer to the Russian audiences that adored him. Romance, resembling a Russian dumky in its melody and mood, is followed by an extensive, brilliant exhibitionist Rondo. The composer here employed virtuoso effects familiar from his other works: quick staccatos, brilliant passage works, left-hand pizzicatos in conjunction with bowing, octaves, pseudo-contrapuntal doublestops. As in Russian Carnival, Op. 11, Wieniawski uses here dynamic contrasts, changes of tempo and tonality, bringing variety of moods to the fore. The style of the whole composition is in the nature of a drawing-room or show piece typical of the epoch. The present edition has been based on the editions by Kistner and Universal Edition which I consider to be the most reliable. As regards fingering and bowing I have taken into consideration contemporary requirements, at the same time respecting the composers original solutions. At some points I have supplemented articulation and added punctuation marks. Except for some minor adjustments, dynamics remain unchanged. On account of instrumental qualities, the presently published pieces provide an excellent preparation for the more difficult compositions by Wieniawski and other composers. I think that adequately gifted and ambitious students as well as concert-giving violinists will enjoy playing them and both the didactic and concert violin repertory will be enriched by this undoubtedly valuable item.
