Serenade is an enigmatic and mysterious piece. This peculiar Nachtmusik bears no resemblance to the rococo multipart forms, referred to by Stravinsky in his Serenade in A. It is rather closer to The Interrupted Serenade from the first book of Preludes by Debussy, though in mood, harmonic aura and its flimsiness of texture it rather reminds us of the famous prelude before the La sérénade interrompue, La fille aux cheveux de lin. The piece is held in the dynamic range from p to mf; all subito f and subito ff appear and disappear like lightening.
