Six Suites for Violoncello Solo
(6 Suites a violoncello solo senza basso)
Johann Sebastian Bach's stay in Cőtchen was exceptionally fruitful. In the few years from 1717 to 1723 he produced his most important instrumental works. The ''Suites for Violoncello Solo'' were written in the same period. There is every reason to suppose that these pieces - which rank as the greatest treasures in the repertory of the instrument even today - were performed by the cellists of Bach's day, at least in the composer's own country. Later, however, they were to be neglected for more than a century. [Kazimierz Wiłkomirski]
