String Quartet No.4
'Of Tarnowskie Góry'
String Quartet No. 4 ''Of Tarnowskie Góry'' is dedicated to the lovers of the Tarnowskie Góry region and was composed in 2000 in response to a commission from their association. It was premiered by the Silesian Quartet on 3 December 2000 at the ''Silesian Quartet and Its Guests'' Chamber Music Festival. It lasts c. 17 minutes and consists of two movements which are similar in length and performed attacca. The first movement, in slow tempo, bears the direction misterioso and grows out of a theme presented at the beginning by the whole ensemble. Other characteristic features include glissandos and small, irregular elements disturbing the unequivocal nature of the melodic line. Gradually an intensifying expression moves the music into ever higher registers leading to an ecstatic final section, followed by the initial theme. The second movement is built the other way round: its framework consists of segments based on motoric chords played by the ensemble deciso e energico, whereas the middle contains a wide expanse of quiet, euphonic music, glittering with melismas and passionate ornaments. The rich melodic invention is especially charming here as well as the construction of a noble dialogue between the particular instruments of the quartet. [Ludwik Erhardt]
