Tarantella
for baritone and piano
‘Tarantella’ is one of Lutosławski's shortest compositions – it lasts a little over two minutes, but in no way does it deserve to be categorized as a marginal work. Perfectly in tune with the text, the music deepens the poem's expression – both the lively dance-like character of the first scene, and the nostalgic reverie of the last verses. Equally impressive is the precise organization of the sonic material and the refined use of harmony, so typical of Lutosławski’s mature style.
