Adam Świerzyński

1914-1997

Świerzyński Adam, *25 I 1914 Kraków, †6 VII 1997 Warsaw, composer and pedagogue, son of Michał Ś. In the years 1926 to 1931 he studied at the Conservatory in Kraków. From 1931 to 1934 he studied composition at the State Conservatory of Music in Poznań with S. Wiechowicz, in 1936-39, law at Warsaw University (Masters in 1945), from 1947 to 1950 composition at the PWSM (now the University of Music) in Warsaw with P. Rytel and from 1948 to 1950 musicology with A. Simon at the University of Łódź. In the years 1947 to 1957 he taught theoretical subjects in the F. Chopin PŚSM in Warsaw. From 1952 to 1955 he was a pianist and presenter with the Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe Imprez Estradowych (State Stage Enterprise) "Artos", in 1956 president of the Warsaw Music Society, from 1963 a member of the Association of Polish Sailors, the Polish Association of Maritime Cultural Activists and the Kashubian-Pomeranian Society, concentrating his work from then on around the Kashubian-marine theme. In the years 1972-1980 he organized 12 concerts of marine music in Warsaw, edited the publication «Polska Muzyka Marynistyczna», in 1974 he founded the instrumental ensemble Mare Nostrum. He was an honorary member of the Association of Maritime Cultural Activists (1981). Honours: 1979 Cultural Activist of Merit, 1980 Merit for Polish Maritime Activity, 1982 Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta; Awards: 1972 Award of the Minister of National Defence, 1975 award of the Minister of Culture and the Arts, 1978 Award of the Minister of Foreign Trade and Maritime Economy for lifetime maritime achievements.
