Edward Bury

1919-1995

Edward Bury, born 18 September, 1919, in Gnieźno, died on 13 February, 1995, in Krakow, Polish composer, conductor, pianist and pedagogue. In the years 1937-1944 he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory (piano, with Z. Drzewiecki, composition with K. Sikorski, conducting with W. Bierdiajew). During the war he organized underground concerts in Warsaw and took part in them as a pianist and conductor. After the war he settled in Krakow; in 1945-1954 he taught at the PWSM, from 1952 as professor, he commuted to Bydgoszcz, where he was conductor of the Pomeranian Symphony Orchestra. He appeared as guest conductor at philharmonics all over the country. In 1975 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
