Barbara Buczek was born on 9 January, 1940 in Krakow, died on 17 January 1993, Krakow, Polish composer and pianist. After finishing the State Music Liceum in Krakow in 1959 in the piano class of M. Bilińska-Regierowa she continued learning to play the piano under the direction of L. Stefański from 1959-1965 PWSM (now the Academy of Music), and in 1969-1974 she studied composition with B. Schaeffer, graduating in both directions with distinction, till the end of her life she worked at the university as a teacher. In 1990 she defended her doctoral dissertation in the Faculty of Humanities of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin with a thesis "Meeting of contemporary music with plastic arts as a problem of philosophy of culture. The years 1945-1990." She belonged to the Grupa Krakowska artistic association and the international association of Frau und Musik. In 1970 she was awarded third prize at the G. Fitelberg Composition Competition in Katowice for "Two Impressions", in 1982 an award in the N. Paganini International Composition Competition in Rome for "Violin Concerto", in 1985 - third prize in the International Composition Competition in Vienna for "String Quartet No.2 Transgressio."
She wrote pieces with such a complicated texture and so difficult to perform that a precise realisation of all of the details of the composition is almost impossible. The composer defined this idea as "the charm of impossibility."
