Jan Wincenty Hawel

Jan Wincenty Hawel – born 10 VII 1936 in Pszów (by Wodzisław Śląski), polish composer, conductor and pedagogue. He completed his studies at the PWSM in Katowice (now the Akademia Muzyczna), gaining three diplomas: in 1960 in the pedagogy department, in 1964 for composition from the class of B. Szabelski and in 1967 conducting in K. Stryja’s class. From 1968 he taught at the K. Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice, where in the years 1981-87 and 1990-96 he undertook the function of Rector. From 1981 he was the manager and conductor of the Silesian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra; as a conductor he has made many recordings for WOSPRiTV in Katowice. For a number of years he was active as an animator of amateur musical life, leading choirs and Dance and Song Ensembles. Four times he received the Minister for Culture and Sport’s Prize (1975, 1978, 1981, and 1987), he is the winner of many composition competitions, including II prize at the G. Fitelberg competition (1972) for "Sinfonia Concertante", I prize at the Katowice composition competition (1982) for "Oratorium polskie".
