Stefan Feliks Gąsieniec – a composer, pianist and arranger born in 1979, a prominent figure on the Polish and international music scene for many years. A graduate of the Composition Department of Wrocław Music Academy.
Gąsieniec has composed several hundred pieces of light and contemporary music for various forces – piano, orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice – as well as music for stage and film, and also educational pieces for children. His songs and pedagogic miniatures, highly regarded by teachers, speech therapists and parents, are adapted to the needs of the youngest children, while retaining melodic, articulatory and rhythmic qualities.
The composer wrote all the music for Krzysztof Cugowski’s solo album Przebudzenie, as well as arrangements and compositions for other leading Polish artists. He wrote the theme tune for the Silesia Film Company and the music to the closing song ‘Każdy dzień’ from the TV series Na wspólnej. He has worked with such artists as Krzesimir Dębski, Janusz Stokłosa, Stanisław Soyka, Justyna Steczkowska, Grzegorz Markowski, Piotr Rogucki, Ewa Bem, Olga Bończyk and Marek Bałata.
As a pianist, Gąsieniec has performed at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), and also on stages in France, Austria, Czechia and Germany. He has also formed (as pianist, arranger and vocalist) a concert duo with actor Tomasz Stockinger, with whom he has given hundreds of concerts in Poland and abroad, combining music, poetry and theatre.
Over the years, he has worked with leading educational, musical and phonographic companies, such as PWM, MAC Edukacja, WSiP, Nowa Era, Klett, MacMillan Education, Zielona Sowa, AWM, Dwukropek, Skrzat, Harmonia, Wydawnictwo Sióstr Loretanek, MTJ, Universal, Magic Records, Good Time Radio, ORE and Singing Toddlers. His works have appeared in more than a hundred book publications, including school textbooks, and also on CD recordings, digital materials and educational apps.
Stefan Gąsieniec has received many awards and distinctions for his composition work, such as the Grand Prix Jazz Juniors for the Stefan Gąsieniec Trio (Kraków 2004), the Wrocław Music Prize (2005), a distinction in the 3rd Warsaw Jazz Pianists Festival (2005), a prize for the best composition at the Jazz nad Odrą festival (Wrocław 2005), the Ministry of Culture Award (for the cantata Błogosławiony Czesław – Pogromca Śmierci – Obrońca Wrocławia [Blessed Czesław – Conqueror of Death – Defender of Wrocław]) in recognition of his inestimable services to Polish culture (2009), a distinction for the composition Inara Lyn in the Song of the Year competition (US, 2015) and fourth place in the International Composition Competition organised by ProjectSAM (2015). He has also been a finalist in the 39th Montreux Jazz Festival (2005) and a laureate of the Krzysztof Komeda Composition Competition (Słupsk 2007).
In his composition work, Gąsieniec combines melodiousness and a flair for narrative and emotion with modern form, as well as taking great care over the qualities of the sound. His style, though classically rooted, draws on various traditions and genres – from the lyricism of piano music, through jazz and film music, to modern narrative techniques.
