Joanna Woźny
*1973
Between 1992 and 1998, she studied philosophy at the University of Silesia in Katowice. From 1996 to 2003, pursued studies in composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Gerd Kühr and Beat Furrer. She also took composition lessons with Younghi Pagh-Paan and, as part of the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music, studied with Pierluigi Billone, Chaya Czernowin, Brian Ferneyhough and Mathias Spahlinger.
Joanna Woźny has received numerous awards, including the City of Graz Music Prize in 2001, the University of Graz Award for Artistic Achievement in 2004, the SKE Publicity Prize and the Erste Bank Composition Prize in 2010, and the Andrzej Dobrowolski Composition Prize in 2017. In 2011, she was a composer-in-residence at Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne and was also selected as “Young Composer in Residence” by the PHACE ensemble.
Her works have been performed at major international contemporary music festivals, including Warsaw Autumn, the Donaueschingen Music Days, the Wittener Days for New Chamber Music, Musica Polonica Nova, Wien Modern, Ultraschall Berlin, Klangspuren Schwaz, Musikprotokoll Graz, the Forum Neuer Musik in Cologne, Eclat Stuttgart, and the ISCM World New Music Days (2013).
Woźny has collaborated with renowned ensembles and orchestras such as the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO), the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO), the Munich Radio Orchestra, the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Mosaik, ensemble recherche, the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Kwartludium, Ensemble ascolta, NeoQuartet, Ensemble Courage, PluralEnsemble, Ensemble PHACE, die reihe, and others.
Her works have been conducted by, among others, Brad Lubman, Enno Poppe, Lukas Vis and Sylvain Cambreling.
Since 2013, she has been working as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
