Good Night
Op. 63 for Soprano, Alto Flute, Piano and 3 tam-tams
Good Night is the second of the two compositions ''in memorian'' written by Górecki in 1990, the second one being a short piano piece Intermezzo. Górecki wished ''Good Night'' to Michael Vyner, the artistic director of the London Sinfonietta. This dedication is brought into prominence in the final section of the work, which contains a musical code deriving from the letters of the surname of the ensemble's director. The soprano, for whom Górecki uses the words of Horace's farewell speech to Hamlet (''Goodnight... flights of angels sing thee to thy rest'', in: W. Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act V, scene II) set to music, full of grief and sadness, is the most expressive part.
