From the Viliya
three songs for bas-baritone and piano
In 1990, Romuald Twardowski wrote a very personal cycle of songs titled From the Viliya, dedicated
to his mother. Twardowski was born in 1930 in this beautiful, once Polish city, namely Vilnius, and
he also spent there his early childhood.
It is no secret that the impressions from this earliest period of life are very memorable. In this
cycle we have three songs, written to words by Helena Massalska-Kołaczkowska, dealing with all the
richness of ‘smells,’ ‘flavours,’ colours, sounds; with all these wonderful bits of childhood memories.
