The Face of the Sea
five songs for bass-baritone and piano
Romuald Twardowski's cycle of five songs to poems of various artists in this composition: Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska, Jacek Łukasiewicz, Kazimierz Sowiński. Despite the reference to texts of various authors, the cycle is extremely coherent, one could say ‘compact,’ in spite of the fact that individual pieces have a different literary and musical character. They are a sui generis journey deep into the ocean, but also deep into oneself. The cycle consists of impressions related to the sea or ocean, to its depth and mystery. There are also sea creatures: fish and the ‘spooky’ Corsair; a kind of ‘flying Dutchman.’ - Tomasz Konieczny, fragment of preface
