Improvisations on the Polish Sacred Song 'Holy God' Theme
Op. 38
Improvisations on the Sacred Song ''Holy God'' Theme were published by Otton June in Leipzig and were entitled Improvisationen über ein altes polnisches Kirchenlied. They were preceded by a quotation in Greek: ''Holy God, Holy Powerful, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.'' They are briefly developed variations on the melody of a beautiful Polish sacred song, hence the title of this work: Improvisations and not Variations. It is possible that they form a reconstruction, a notation of one of Surzyński's improvisations, because, as is well known, he possessed a great improvisatory talent and frequently extemporised in public on the organ and piano on original or existing themes.
