Revolutions
for flute and tuba
Revolutions for flute and tuba, written in the summer of 2023, is a work commissioned by Art Mintaka Foundation for a special Copernican Concert marking the 550th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus’ birth.
The title of the piece refers to the astronomer’s scientific theories; not to those concerning the motion of celestial bodies, but to a less-known theorem about circles. The sound material of the composition echoes the ideas of another Nicolas (namely, Nicolas Slonimsky, 1894–1995), whose Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns is an inexhaustible source of melodic inspiration.
