Sacher Variation
for Cello Solo
World - famous Swiss conductor and art patron Paul Sacher celebrated his 70th birthday in 1976 and Mstislav Rostropovich wanted to prepare something special for that occasion. He asked some ten composers to write a short solo cello piece that would be based on the sounds corresponding with the letters of the Sacher surname (Es, A, C, H, Re). I was one of those compositions written then were performed by Rostropovich at a festive concert in Zurich on May 2, 1976. [Witold Lutosławski]
