Selected Studies
Opp. 31, 131 for Cello
Sebastian Lee distinguished himself in the musical history first of all as an author of educational compositions. His studies, caprices, duets etc. have brought up many a generation of cellists and are still a valuable help to the teacher.
The studies of Sebastian Lee combine technical problems with tunefulness and that is why students play them willingly. Selected Studies primarily aim at making the student familiar with and accustomed to the four positions (3rd year of studies). Thinking about the beginners I have tried to give bowing and fingering indications in the easiest form. More advanced students may - in the case of studies 1, 2, 6 and 10 - perform one bar for one bowstroke. As far as finger-ing is concerned, on purpose I give one version only, because in my opinion the diversity of fingering causes unnecessary confusion and hinders less experienced teachers in their work.
Studies which have been worked out thoroughly provide not only technical advantages but also teach interpretation because of their musical values.
I am convinced that presenting the studies of Sebastian Lee for use will encourage many a cellist to arduous practising and will introduce him into a new world of sounds and harmony. [Zofia Adamska]
