The work was written in 1953. Its first performance by the composer herself took place during a concert organized by the Polish Composers' Union. It ranks among the best compositions of this genre in the whole twentieth-century music for piano, its form being excellently laid out. The work abounds in unexpected dramatic turns and requires great technical skill from the performer.
