''The work exemplifies a new approach to orchestral writing: individual groups are treated with equal importance, as in a composition of polygenic nature but, at the same time, an attempt is made to produce new qualities from it through greater diversification of registers, quicker changes in texture, independent handling of individual (especially percussive) instruments. The composer keeps herself aloof from the older types of narration (...). The Variations demonstrate how smoothly Grażyna Bacewicz began to adopt the elements of the new sonoristic technique and how she managed to keep her own musical world built arduously but with a 'steady hand'' and with full consciousness of an intended effect.
