Three Songs is of great significance for Górecki, who dedicated the work to the memory of his late mother. He emphasized this importance by choosing for the first two songs - poems by Juliusz Słowacki, who - in his opinion was the most significant Polish poet of the nineteenth century and one whose poetry he valued especially highly. The poems are: To Mother and What was this funereal bell? The third song A Bird, set to the words by Julian Tuwim, contrasts with the previous ones with its lightier and more serene mood. The second song is especially expressive as it pictures a funeral procession, in which a son bears his mother's coffin. The atmosphere of grief, despair and anger caused by the passing away of a beloved person has been ideally expressed by musical means. [Based on A. Thomas, Górecki, Kraków 1998, PWM]
