Trois mazurkas Op.2
for piano
As with Chopin’s mazurkas, each of the three miniatures which make up this set betrays references to the folk tradition, evident in rhythmic patterns, harmonic phrases and formal shapings. They differ from the Chopin prototype, meanwhile, in Statkowski’s use of polyrhythm, polymetre, hemiola and motifs typical typical of other dances, such as the waltz. Roman Statkowski’s Mazurkas op.2 draw of the Chopin tradition, but also take a new look at the genre, making them an interesting item both for training pianists and for concert repertoire. They might be seen as a bridge between the mazurkas of F. Chopin and those composed in a twentieth-century spirit by K. Szymanowski and R. Maciejewski.
