Immortelles op. 19
for Piano
This publication is an early set of eight miniature pieces entitled Immortelles, Op. 19.
Immortelles is marked by the poetics of the lyrical instrumental miniature. The shaping of the melodic line is dominated by cantabile of a vocal provenance, and slow and moderate tempi are most common. Although there are common features among the works, each of the eight miniatures is a distinct whole, bringing to the set a unique character and expression. The distinctness of the works is determined particularly by the varied textural solutions, displaying the piano’s extremely rich range of dynamic and expressive possibilities. Statkowski employs expanded chords of up to nine notes, and contrasts a dense texture with passages of one or two voices, presenting musical ideas in both low and high registers.
The French title Immortelles can also be read in terms of the expression of what was most important in music for Statkowski, what was personal, timeless and valuable to him. In this very context, we are entitled to suppose that the composer turned to the tradition of the piano miniature that formed in Romantic times and referred to the convention of salon music, in ‘the good sense of the word’, as Stanisław Niewiadomski wrote in his 1900 review of this set. Another ‘immortal’ value for Statkowski was the music of Fryderyk Chopin, echoes of which can be found in Immortelles in the form of melodic phrases and harmonic solutions. All of these tendencies remained current in the composer’s later output, which shows how important they were to him.
