Bacewicz - Karłowicz - Noskowski

2009-02-02
Promotional projects and publications by PWM on the occasion of the anniversaries of these composers in 2009.

In the year 2009 there is an accumulation of anniversaries important for Polish musical culture – the 100th anniversary of Grażyna Bacewicz’s birth and the 40th of her death, the 100th  anniversary of the deaths of Zygmunt Noskowski and Mieczysław Karłowicz. To commemorate these  composers from three successive generations who all very strongly made their mark on the history of Polish music, PWM has prepared a number of special projects and promotional publications.

The exhibition Mieczyslaw Karłowicz - Music and the Tatra Mountains, which presents the composer, his parents and friends, and - above all - his mountain inspiration has just started its journey round Poland in Zakopane. The exhibition is the illustrated story of a man in whose life music was closely entwined with a fascination for the Tatra Mountains. Karłowicz was not only an outstanding mountaineer, co-founder of the Tatra Voluntary Rescue Team, but also a passionate skier, and a great amateur photographer. Most of the photos in the exhibition are by the composer. These include prints of the few surviving glass plates from the Karłowicz’s camera.

The exhibition is accompanied by a newly released book by Maciej Pinkwart ‘Mieczysław Karłowicz’s Zakopane Trails’, which will be launched in Zakopane on the 4th of February. The book is accompanied by a CD of the exhibition. In addition, we have launched a website www.karlowicz.art.pl, where you can see all the pictures from the exhibition and updates for the exhibition schedule.

We hope that the exhibition will enjoy interest from both Polish and foreign institutions as well as visitors. We hope too that it will contribute to the promotion of Mieczysław Karłowicz's music, which is little known outside the country. Information concerning lending the exhibition can be obtained from PWM Promotional Department. The project was implemented by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in collaboration with the Central PTTK Mountain Tourism Center in Krakow.

On PWM’s website you will find a current calendar of concerts, in which the works will not only be by Bacewicz, Noskowski and Karłowicz, but also many other composers associated with our office.

We are pleased to inform you that three works by Grazyna Bacewicz - youthful compositions for string orchestra Symphoniette (1929), Sinfonietta (1935) and Symphony (1946) are available from PWM’s lending library. They can be heard at a concert at the National Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra on 16th of February in Warsaw, in the XIII Lutosławski Forum. Two of these works will be premiered during this concert. In addition, in the coming months we will publish a piano reduction of Grażyna Bacewicz’s first violin concerto.

In preparation are two promotional folders presenting Grażyna Bacewicz and Mieczysław Karłowicz including a catalogue of their works published by PWM. An electronic version of the folders will be available on our website.

Before the holiday we shall announce a competition for young journalists, The Zygmunt Noskowski Competition, which will aim to promote talented young people writing about music and a reminder that Noskowski was not only a composer but also enjoyed a very active writing career.

All pieces by Grażyna Bacewicz, Mieczysław Karłowicz and Zygmunt Noskowski previously published  by PWM are available either off the shelf or printed on request. If you have any questions regarding our offer or an order please contact us on handel@pwm.com.pl or internet@pwm.com.pl.

Further activities related to these anniversaries will be announced via our website.

THE TALE OF THE HEART. FAVOLA IN MUSICA: a joint project by Aleksander Nowak and Radek Rak from ANAKLASIS on sale as of 6th October

It is a musical-literary tale about a quest for identity, truth, and for what makes us human. The new stage work by Aleksander Nowak – which is, at the same time, Radek Rak’s operatic debut – explores the sources of good and evil, fusing reality with mythology and steering towards ‘the left-hand side of the world’. The authors spin a tale about the dual human nature. THE TALE OF THE HEART. FAVOLA IN MUSICA – the album that presents their joint project – will go on sale on 6th October.
