Julianna Awdiejewa is the winner of the XVI Chopin Competition
2010-10-21
A native of Moscow studying in Zurich, 25-year-old pianist Julianna Awdiejewa was the winner of the Sixteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition. The Grand Prix is 30 thousand euros, a gold medal and the possibility of performing with the New York Philharmonic. Music lovers and lovers of Chopin's music watched for twenty days with bated breath as 79 participants struggled through the sixteenth edition. Along with them, the skills of the young pianists were watched and evaluated by the jury chaired by prof. Andrzej Jasinski (including Martha Argerich, Dang Thai Son, Bella Davidovich, Nelson Freire, Adam Harasiewicz, Piotr Paleczny).Yesterday (20 October), shortly before midnight, the jury's verdict was announced. First place was awarded to Julianna Awdiejewa, II - ex aequo to the Austrian Ingolf Wunder and Lithuanian (representing Russia) Lukas Geniušas, III - 19-year-old Daniił Trifonow. IV and V prizes went to Bulgarian Yevgeny Bożanow and Frenchman Francois Dumont. Nikołaj Choziajnow (Russia), Paweł Wakarecy (Poland), Hélène Tysman (France) and Mirosław Kultyszew (Russia) received distinctions.
Prizes were also awarded for the best performance of specific works. Results: The best performance of a polonaise in the second stage - Lukas Geniušas, the best performance of mazurkas - Daniił Trifonow, the best concerto performance - Ingolf Wunder, best sonata performance - Julianna Awdiejewa, the best performance of the Polonaise-fantasy, op. 61 - Ingolf Wunder.
The verdict is considered sensational. The audience who listened to the final stage most took to their liking Ingolf Wunder’s perfomance, awarding him a standing ovation, whilst the Internet listeners on the official websites of the Frederic Chopin Institute gave Trifonow the victory. The jury's decision aroused much controversy among the experts gathered in the TVP Kultura studio, while chopinologist Lidia Kozubek, whose favorite was the 18-year-old Nikolai Chozjainow, said of Awdiejewa’s victory: "I am horrified by the decision of the jury."
The first the laureates’ concert will be held today at the Grand Theatre, the next tomorrow and Saturday.

It is a musical-literary tale about a quest for identity, truth, and for what makes us human. The new stage work by Aleksander Nowak – which is, at the same time, Radek Rak’s operatic debut – explores the sources of good and evil, fusing reality with mythology and steering towards ‘the left-hand side of the world’. The authors spin a tale about the dual human nature. THE TALE OF THE HEART. FAVOLA IN MUSICA – the album that presents their joint project – will go on sale on 6th October.
