Autumn with Wojciech Kilar's Film Music

Enjoying great popularity, film music by Wojciech Kilar will celebrate triumphs on the Polish and international music scenes this autumn. In the near future, September 28, 2011 it will feature in the inauguration of a new project by the Gorzów Philharmonic: International Festival of Films About Music KAMERaTON. The orchestra of the local Philharmonic under the direction of Piotr Borkowski will perform pieces of music from the films „Pan Tadeusz”, „Zemsta”, „Smuga cienia”, „Dracula”, „Pianista”, „Trędowata” and „Ziemia obiecana”. This is an interesting initiative, the only festival of its kind in Poland, and one of the few in the world, devoted exclusively to films about music and is the brainchild of the Directorate of the Gorzów Philharmonic. Interest in the Festival, which was born with the rise of the Philharmonic in Gorzów, has exceeded our wildest expectations. In addition to Poland, films have been submitted from Germany, France, Italy, Iceland, Britain, Bulgaria, Latvia, Israel, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary - the organisers inform on their website. During the festival films will be judged in five categories: biographies and portraits of musicians, concerts, recitals, plays, documentaries, film and - artistic impressions and musical education. The event, which is under the patronage of TVP Kultura, will be held from 28 September - 2 October 2011 in the Gorzów Philharmonic.Kilar's music will soon be heard in the UK. September 30, 2011 a young ensemble, Edinburgh Film Music Orchestra conducted by Yati Durant, operating at Edinburgh University will perform a suite of music from the movie "Dracula".
In early October, on the other hand, Kilar’s film music will be welcomed at another festival. This will be the XVI Festival of Polish Composers in Bielsko-Biała, dedicated to the memory of H.M. Górecki who died a year earlier. As Jacek Krywult, President of Bielsko-Biala, mentioned, the composer patronised the festival from the beginning and was its good spirit. This is why we will hear his Third Symphony during the opening concert. The remaining days of the festival - in accordance with what was agreed last year with Professor Górecki – will be filled with film music. And so, 7 October 2011 in a performance by the Silesian Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Miroslaw J. Błaszczyk we will hear the music to the films: „Dracula”, „Pan Tadeusz”, „Bilans kwartalny”, „Trędowata”, „Smuga cienia” and „Ziemia obiecana”. The Silesian Philharmonic will repeat the same repertoire on October 15, 2011 in Katowice. The concert, entitled „Arcydzieła ekranu ("Masterpieces of the Screen”), will be held in their temporary home, the “Gallus” Hall, serving the orchestra during the refurbishment of the Philharmonic building.

Spectacularly successful as Ludomir Różycki’s music was in his lifetime, it is seldom programmed nowadays. All the same, such remarkable art could hardly fall into utter oblivion. It has attracted and fascinated excellent jazz pianist Kuba Stankiewicz, who has translated it into the language of jazz. The effects have been recorded and released on ANAKLASIS label’s most recent album, INSPIRED BY LUDOMIR RÓŻYCKI, which goes on sale as of 28th August.
PWM Edition is entering the execution phase of the revitalisation of its Warsaw department. With the commencement of the renovation and the implementation of the assumptions of the architectural design, the Hire Department and the editorial office of “Ruch Muzyczny” are moving to a temporary headquarters at 19 Wiejska Street, Warsaw.
This is by no means a piece about the centuries-long Polish-German conflict. It is, instead, a tale of impossible love, of tragic conflict between personal happiness and the common good.
PWM Edition resumes cooperation with the Italian publishing house Ricordi, as well as with its international partners forming Universal Music Publishing Classics & Screen. This means that rentals of orchestral materials from the catalogues of all publishing houses belonging to Classics & Screen is carried out in Poland by Dział Zbiorów Nutowych (Sheet Music Department) of PWM.

When asked to attempt a definition of her music, she called it lyrical expressionism. The choice of this term says much about the emotional intensity of Elżbieta Sikora’s music, which may reflect the experience of her two home countries, Poland and France, but is also a consequence of her artistic maturation in an age when two powerful trends – the avant-garde and neo-Classicism – were vying for the palm. Such a label may also result from the artist’s focus on the listener as her target, whom she invariably attempts to surprise, shock, or bewilder.

Over 300 performances of works by Polish composers, 114 finalists, a total of 36 repertoire pieces in 6 age categories, 20 winners, 17 jurors, 4 competition locations and one day of master classes. The piano competition for children and teenagers, “ChopinLand Piano Competition,” is behind us – an extraordinary project that took several months, which PWM Edition organized in Japan. Thanks to cooperation with local partners, Polish music could reach hundreds of young pianists and their teachers, creating the ambassadors of Polish music in the Land of the Rising Sun.
