Mieczysław Karłowicz's "Rapsodia litewska" in Malaysia

In the coming days, 8 and 9 October 2011, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Jacek Kasprzyk will perform Mieczysław Karlowicz’s symphonic poem Rapsodia litewska, op. 11. The concert will be held at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall in Kuala Lumpur. During the concert, Beethoven’s "Egmont" overture and "Piano Concerto 1" will be heard as well as the suite from B. Bartók’s ballet, "The Miraculous Mandarin".Rapsodia litewska is one of six such pieces of this type in Karłowicz’s compositional output. It was written in 1906 and is his only composition based on original folk music. In it, the composer used several Belarusian folk melodies (writing about Lithuanian melodies, he meant Belarusian music), that he put through an artisitic arrangement. “I have finished a piece,” he wrote in a letter to Adolf Chybiński on 24th November 1906, “which I shall probably name Rapsodia litewska. In it, I tried to conjure the whole sorrow, sadness and eternal slavery of the people whose songs sounded in my childhood. (...) Whether and to what extent I succeeded in pouring, even a part of what hangs, dissolved in the air of every neuk and cranny of those parts, into the form of an orchestral piece, I cannot judge.”

In November, another of Mieczysław Karlowicz’s symphonic poems - „Odwieczne pieśni” - will be performed in New Zealand by the New Plymouth Orchestra conducted by Adam Jasiński.

The 4CD album featuring songs and instrumental works by the Silesian master goes on sale as of 8 November. The Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw invites to the inaugural session of the biennial International Digital Musicology Conference, which will be held 23–25 October 2024, at the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, Poland.
