Classics of Classical Music Performed by NOSPR
2012-02-06
On Friday, February 10 at 19.30, the National Symphony Orchestra of Polish Radio in Katowice will perform under the direction of Alexander Liebreich, already familiar to Silesian music lovers. The orchestra’s guest will be the accomplished German cellist, Daniel Müller-Schott. The concert program will be filled with classical Viennese works: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Haffner Symphony, the Concerto for Cello in C Major by Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven’s VII Symphony. The Haffner Symphony, though composed in 1782, refers to the composer's earlier serenade style. The musical material of the symphony comes from a serenade, created previously for Mozart’s friends, the Haffner family; hence, in spite of many changes - both thematic and formal - the work has a festive character, suitable for an incidental work, then popular.
While the great vocal-instrumental forms constitute Haydn’s traditional output, a huge number of instrumental pieces have given the comoser a permanent place among the three great’s of classical Vienna. The Cello Concerto in C major was created when Haydn worked at the court of princes Esterhazy. As the court Kapellmeister, Haydn had at his disposal an orchestra, a chamber ensemble and theatre stage, which opened great creative possibilities for him. Among many solo concertos, mostly hastily composed to order, the Cello Concerto in C major is distinguished by lightness, freedom in use of the soloist and thoughtful juxtaposition of said soloist with the orchestra. Gracefully written with a compact formal vision and a well crafted cello part are the reasons why soloists willingly include this concerto in their repertoire.
At the end, the audience will hear a masterpiece - Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony VII. Although Beethoven's style lies within the style of Classicism, his revolutionary formal and technical solutions and new ways of musical thinking allow the composer to be called "the father of modern music". In his revision of sonata form the artist most fully expressed his genius in his symphonic works. Written in 1812, the Seventh Symphony was created after a few years break in the composition of larger forms, it departs from ideological content and does not have a poetic programme. Named by Wagner as the "apotheosis of the dance", in essence it "pulses" and the form-creating rhythm and constant movement are a joyful, energetic expression of the work.
