''Ten Polish Dances'' belongs to the field of 'utility music' works inspired by the folk music of the Silesia and Kaszuby regions. Folk music stimulated the composer in his search for technical solutions appropriate to the original material: an approach which was simple but at the same time not lacking in sophistication, emphasizing the diverse character of particular dances (spontaneity, grace or boisterousness) and enhancing the artistic quality of the original. In using repetitions, changing the colour of motifs and melodies, which pass from one instrument to another and from one register to another, and in adding an introduction or an ending, the composer applied the precision of a jeweller. Very possibly the only unpublished work so far in Witold Lutosławski's post-war instrumental output, ''Ten Polish Dances'' was written - as the composer pointed out himself - for Polish Recordings, and in particular its children's records library. When writing for chlildren, he above all had in mind child performers. In this case, however, the composer thought about children as listeners, becouse the cycle of dances is intended more for a professional orchestra and requires some efficiency from performers. [E. Widłak]
