The end of July 2017 was exceptionally rainy. It rained for days on end… That cloudy weather spurred me to write a new work. Its first version was binned. Fortunately, the next idea that came to my mind, just before I fell asleep, proved more felicitous. The next morning, I sat down to work, and the new motif proved so fruitful that all I had to do was write out the work.
Why Hazy Melodies? Well, because melodies long since disappeared from contemporary compositional output. I have tried, in part, to return to them, but very hazily...
So this is not a programme work about rain or a ‘raindrop’ prelude. Perhaps it only refers in its mood to those ‘hazy’ days …
