Toccata
for Piano and Accordion
Toccata was written in 2017 with a dedication to the Duo Wolańska/Gajda, comprising two talented young artists: pianist Julia Wolańska-Gajda and accordionist Michał Gajda.
The idea behind the form of this work comes from the meaning of the Italian word toccare, which can be translated as ‘to strike’, ‘to touch’ or ‘to move’. In this composition, I drew on the extensive sound qualities of the piano and the accordion, suited to the possible ways of understanding the word toccare. Thanks to those qualities, this work is suffused with various types of expression: from dynamic and motoric to subtle and lyrical.
Toccata has been performed many times in Poland and has also been played in Indonesia and Thailand.
