The Seine through Paris
notes for saxophone
Imagine a peaceful journey by Batobus boat service along the River Seine in Paris. We will pass by the botanical gardens (Le Jardin des Plantes), then the island known as L’Île Saint-Louis, the Notre Dame Cathedral, and under the city’s oldest bridge, Le Pont Neuf. We will see Place de la Concorde, the Grand Palais exhibition site, the Alma-Marceau metro station, and the soaring Eiffel Tower. We will pull in to shore opposite L'Île aux Cygnes, the Isle of the Swans.
Four of these little pieces contain hidden tune fragments that allude to places which, though close to the boat service stops, are poorly (if at all) visible from the river. Can you trace those melodies and relate them to the locations they refer to?
Those four extraordinary sites are the Hôtel Lambert (once frequented by Fryderyk Chopin, Adam Mickiewicz, and Cyprian Kamil Norwid), the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Statue of Liberty (a copy of the one in New York).
Good luck with your search!
