2012-06-12
Between mid July and September 2012, 180 Polish cultural events will feature in four festivals in the Scottish capital, which every year attract the most interesting artists and nearly half a million audience from around the world. Polish artists will present their work as part of the framework prepared by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute, "Polish Arts in Edinburgh in 2012". This is the largest Polish programme shown at the Edinburgh festivals so far. Polish culture will be hosted at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinbugh Jazz & Blues Festival and Edinburgh Art Festival and also the Edinburgh International Festival. „In five weeks we will present more than 180 Polish events: concerts of classical music, jazz, theatrical performances, performance art, outdoor and experimental theatre events, contemporary dance, film screenings, meetings and exhibitions and installations,” says Tomasz Janowski, project manager. One of the biggest events will be the performance of all four of Karol Szymanowski’s symphonies on 16-17 August 2012 by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev. The programme also includes his two violin concertos (soloist: Leonidas Kavakos and Nicola Benedetti).
Another big attraction will be the performance of Witold Lutoslawski’s works by the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst (21-22 August 2012). We will hear the "Piano Concerto" with the German pianist Lars Vogt, and the "Concerto for Orchestra."

The theme of the 37th Krakow International Festival of Composers is music in music. Already in the 1970s, this issue was studied by the outstanding founder of the Krakow Theoretical School, Professor Mieczysław Tomaszewski. He reflected on the subject in an article entitled “At the Opening: why ‘music in music’”, which was published before one of the famous Music Meetings in Baranów.
