Elżbieta Sikora's "Five Miniatures for Orchestra"- After the Premiere
2013-11-28
On the occasion of Elżbieta Sikora's 70th birthday, Polish Radio 2 organised a concert, which took place on November 24 in the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio in Warsaw. The Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Wojciech Michniewski played, premiering the work "Five Miniatures" for orchestra. As Ewa Cichoń wrote, the premiere of the work turned out to be a "fresh-sounding composition, internally contrasted, using a variety of techniques. Referring in a certain way to tradition, even using the famous B-A-C-H theme, as well as to the composer's earlier works, it didn't seem to stop in the past. Apparently, the composer belongs to that group of artists who, regardless of the meanderings which their careers take, remain open to new possibilities."The work was commissioned by Polish Radio 2, and the composer said about the circumstances surrounding its creation: „I sketched Five Miniatures for orchestra in Paris during a walk thorugh the town shortly after my meeting with director Małgorzata Małaszko, and I wrote them in Dębki on the Polish seaside between June and August 2013”.
At the concert we also heard 3 other compositions by the composer: „Rappel III” for string orchestra (1998), „South Shore” – concertino for blue harp and orchestra (2008) and „Michelangelo” - concerto for saxophone(s) and orchestra (2006).

The theme of the 37th Krakow International Festival of Composers is music in music. Already in the 1970s, this issue was studied by the outstanding founder of the Krakow Theoretical School, Professor Mieczysław Tomaszewski. He reflected on the subject in an article entitled “At the Opening: why ‘music in music’”, which was published before one of the famous Music Meetings in Baranów.
