Michael Bates' Acrobat and Lutosławski Quartet on a Polish tour with music by Witold Lutoslawski
2024-11-04
The esteemed American-Canadian jazz musician Michael Bates, his Acrobat Ensemble and the Lutosławski Quartet will perform three concerts in Poland in November. The repertoire will include material recorded by the musicians on the album METAMORPHOSES: VARIATIONS ON LUTOSŁAWSKI, released by ANAKLASIS in the REVISIONS series.
The artists have already successfully presented it at Lincoln Center and Barbès Jazz Club in New York. In autumn 2024 we will have the opportunity to hear them live for the first time in Poland: 14.11 - Krakow, 15.11 - Lublin, 17.11 - Wroclaw.
Michael Bates is an unusual artist who draws inspiration from diverse, often stylistically distant sources. He began his musical career in hard and punk rock bands, later moving on to jazz, classical and improvised music. After years of studying scores and playing orchestral music in all sorts of contexts, he founded the Acrobat ensemble - a group of chamber musicians with similar background to their leader, offering unlimited instrumental possibilities.
The Lutosławski Quartet has considerable experience in projects with artists of various genres. The Polish ensemble's artistry and the music of their titular patron impressed Michael Bates, who invited them to collaborate on musical material based on compositions by Witold Lutosławski. The result, METAMORPHOSES, captures the energy of innovation, the fervour of unpredictability and the pulse of the action. The sound of the quartet is not a 'filler' for the solos of the Acrobat musicians. The roles of the players in both formations blend in the best possible way to create a unity, just as the improvisations become an integral part of Lutosławski's compositions.
Michael Bates' Acrobat and the Lutoslawski Quartet will begin their Polish tour (14 November) in the concert studio of Radio Krakow during another event in the series 'ANAKLASIS na fali. Sharpen your hearing on Radio Krakow', organised by Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne in cooperation with the radio station. The concert will also be broadcast live on Radio Krakow, as well as re-broadcast on Polish Radio Programme 2 and Radio Krakow Kultura. The following day (15 November) their music will be heard at the Stary Theatre in Lublin. The last stop is the "Red Hall" of the National Music Forum in Wroclaw and a concert (17 November) as part of the Jazztopad Festival - one of the most important jazz festivals in Poland.

Musicologists commonly call it “Kras 52” – after the former reference number it was given in the Krasiński Library. It is the most valuable Polish source of medieval polyphonic music, which shaped the soundscape of the court of the first Jagiellons and Kraków at that time. The manuscript is gaining new life now, thanks to a performance edition by Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett and Marc Lewon. “Krasiński Codex” has just been published by PWM Edition with the support of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.

Although Ludomir Różycki - one of the most important representatives of Young Poland - enjoyed spectacular success as a composer during his lifetime, his works are rarely included in concert programmes today. It is therefore worth remembering his exceptional art.
